I actually managed to increase the memory but the importer does nothing. It's just empty below the title, no feedback, no errors.

There is no possible way that it will import a 1gb file. It loads the whole thing into memory. You'd need 3gb available to even try it.

Of course, it is better. When you submit sitemap_index.xml It will cover its all sub parts, such as post, pages, categories, tag, author (depending upon your settings).
