Hi all in Codex-land

I've got an error in my RSS feeds:

"error on line 3 at column 6: XML declaration allowed only at the start of the document"

This is a very common error, which I've only just come across now. Codex and Google searches bring up loads of articles (such as this one) which propose placing the file http://wejn.org/stuff/wejnswpwhitespacefix.php in the site root, and editing index.php to include it. I tried this, no dice. I also installed the plugins fix-rss-feed and XML-RPC De-whitespacer, no dice.

I'm a PHP coder so I understand the basic cause of this problem, which is whitespace being sent out at the start of a XML file which is a no-no. I also understand that some (unnamed) plugins can create this error. I could go through all of my plugins and disable each in turn, but life's not long enough and the problem isn't enough of a problem to justify this. I've already spent an hour diagnosing this problem.

My question is: has there been any progress on fixing this problem, or will it forever remain with Wordpress as long as plugin authors are slack enough to allow it?

It's no big deal as my site is nearly all pages and I couldn't give a monkey's about generating a RSS feed from the tiny blog on it, but future sites might have blogs needing feeds.
