I have a sitemap_index.xml with 5 sitemap.xlm inside. One of this is bwg_tag-sitemap.xml from my PhotoGallery. If I add more tags in my PhotoGallery, I see the result in it the list. But the Change Frequenz is set to weekly and so the Google Webmaster Tools don't notice the additional tags promptly. Here it would be a good idea for a manual refresh.
