You might be having trouble using MAMP that won't happen on the production server.
MAMP might not have permissions on the uploads folder.
My issue is specific to running MAMP for Windows. On my macbook, Only the very last photo in the XML file fails to import. While importing the same file to a WP install on a Windows, all media attachments fail.
