If the XML is in the default WordPress format i.e. it was created with the WordPress exporter then you should be able to import it. Just go to Tools > Import, install a suitable plugin and upload the XML file. If all goes well, you will get your posts, categories and pages back. However media files, plugins and themes will not be restored. In other words you might get your DB back but not the contents of your wp-content directory.
